The city of Austin is considering easing restrictions on pedicab drivers. The proposed changes include allowing pedicabs into new areas of town as well as adjusting their hours of operation. Right now pedicabs are restricted to the greater downtown area. The boundaries include MoPac to the west, Dean Keaton Street to the north, Interstate 35 to the east and Oltorf Street to the south. In addition pedicabs can only operate from 8 am to 4 am with the exceptions of during morning and evening rush hours and during lunchtime. Pedicab operators are hoping to expand the boundaries and extend their working hours.
“With all of the condos and development coming downtown, I think it’s going to be even more of a means of transportation,” says Nathan Lipson, the owner of Metrocycle Pedicabs.
With potentially more freedom for pedicabs, concerns have been raised to the city’s Urban Transportation Commission about the impact on safety and traffic. Commissioners say those concerns are being addressed. They are currently working with city staff on proposed changes. Those changes are expected to be finalized next month
