Grand Rapids sets rules for pedal taxis

GRAND RAPIDS — Pedal-powered taxis may be rolling into Grand Rapids early next year.

City commissioners today scheduled a Jan. 29 public hearing on a proposed set of rules for “pedicabs,” the human-powered rickshaws that are becoming popular in other large cities.

The proposed rules fall somewhere between the “laissez-faire” pedicab rules of some cities and the city’s highly regulated motorized taxicabs, Downtown Development Authority Director Jay Fowler said.

Operators of the three-wheeled vehicles would have to be at least 18 and carry a driver’s license. The pedicabs would be inspected for safety equipment and registered with the city’s Office of Special Affairs. Fares would have to be agreed upon before a trip began, according to the rules.

Fowler said two entrepreneurs have expressed an interest in providing the service in the downtown area.
