Police Investigating Pedicab Hit & Run
Video: Watch Our Latest NewsGregg Watson
Reporting(CBS 42) AUSTIN A pedicab with two people onboard was hit by a car early Friday, and both passengers and the cyclist were left along the south side of the Congress Avenue Bridge, after the car drove away.
One of the passengers remained in serious condition with a fractured skull Friday night.
Police say the driver struck the cab and sped off.
Now, the search is on for that driver — while a family prays and pleads for the suspect to turn him or herself in.
“Just keep your eyes and ears open,” is the advice of one pedi-cab driver. Those are words to live by for the popular cabs that roam the streets of Downtown Austin.
There are about a hundred of them in the city, and CBS 42’s Gregg Watson reports, all are on alert after the hit-and-run.
“People have been drinking, and people aren’t paying attention,” said pedicab driver Robert Chapman. “So, you have to be the person that takes responsibility. Bad things like that happen.”
The crash on the Congress bridge left marks in the street.
Passenger Jeff Uribe is still hospitalized with a fractured skull. His two children, an 11-year-old and eight-year-old don’t understand what happened.
“It’s hard they don’t get to be with their dad right now,” says family friend Cindy Quintero. “They don’t get to take him home. They don’t get to go to baseball. They’re getting ready to go to school on Monday, so it’s really hard on the kids.”
Uribe is beverage representative in town for an event happening on Auditorium Shores — a block from where he was struck. Co-workers are stunned.
“Right now, they’re just getting the best medical care they can in Austin,” said Ellen Applen, a Red Bull spokesperson. “Their family and friends are in town, and we’re doing everything to support them and take care of them through the situation.”
Police are looking for a black sports car with front-end damage. They say the driver had to know he or she hit three people.
“You’re driving. It’s at night, and there’s reflective material as well as the slow triangle on the back as well as possible blinking lights,” says APD Detective James Mason. “I don’t see how they didn’t know they didn’t strike somebody.”
While Uribe clings to life at the hospital, the search is on for the driver. Anyone with information should call police.
